Dum Dum Girls return to the Festsaal a little over six months after their April show (previously) confirmed that these gals are in it for the long haul. That night was a demonstration of all things Dum Dum Girls; sheer indie guitar power, detached cool and killer tunes set in front of some impressive background visuals, they surely won over many sceptics on the night. I remember thinking their cover of The Smiths There Is A Light That Never Goes Out would have Morrissey throwing a tantrum it was so good. Have a listen yourself:
Kristin Gundred, aka Dee Dee, has had a rough couple of years by the sounds of it. With her mother passing away early last year and a seemingly never-ending tour schedule separating her from her husband to boot, you would have forgiven her for diving head first into a binge of substance abuse or for simply losing her way a little for a little while. Not Dee Dee and the Dum Dum Girls.
Following hot on the heels of last spring’s excellent He Gets Me High EP is Only In Dreams , an LP of effortless strength and depth. Dee Dee’s voice is strong and clear taking centre stage, backed with the usual bit of reverb, occasional flashes of fuzz in the guitar lines just around the edges, some excellent guitar solos courtesy of Jules and all the while Bambi and Sandy back them up like an elite-trained band of awesomeness or, as they say themselves, like a vintage V8 engine.
And that’s the point here, constant touring often creates the great bands, their true character coming through on the recordings. Dum Dum Girls Only In Dreams is a perfect example and wil surely find itself in many end of year Top 10s…on mine for sure.
Listen to the whole album here and enjoy the show.
Here’s Heartbeat, one of my favourites from Only In Dreams:
